A House, Defined Biblically

A home is defined as the “place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household.” It is where we eat, sleep, and spend time as a family. It is the hub of our family life.

Praying over your home is one of the greatest acts you can perform for the home and those living in it. In Jesus’ time on earth, each time the disciples went into a home, they prayed for the home. They prayed for the physical structure, but also for the people in it.

The word “household” is mentioned 61 times.

The word “houses” is mentioned 136 times.

The word “house” is mentioned 2024 times.

The first time the word for house is mentioned in the Bible, is in Genesis 7:1 The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. In the KJV, it is written: And the Lord said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.

There are several variations of the word for house used in the Bible. The first is oikia (Greek “οἰκία”, ας, pronounced oy-kee’-ah) It means a house, the people that live in it, and their property or what is inside of the house.

The second is slightly different but very similar: oikos. (Greek “οἶκος,” pronounced oy’-kos). It is translated as a house but is also used to describe the household, family, lineage, and nation of the people that live in the house.

Another definition of this variation of house, is “the family of God, of the Christian Church, of the church of the Old and New Testaments.”

Ultimately, according to the Bible, the home is of incredible importance. Our faith begins in the home, and it is from where sharing the gospel flows to those around us – in and out of the home.

When you consider the biblical definition of house and home, it becomes apparent that praying for your home and its inhabitants is so very important!

So, what is a prayer walkthrough of your home, and how do you do it?

Praying Over Your Home

A prayer walk-through of the home is exactly what it sounds like. It is physically walking through each room or area of the home and praying for God’s protection and blessings, as well as thanking and praising Him.

Praying over your home is a wonderful way to cleanse the home from any of the devil’s schemes. By praying over your home, you are asking God to protect those inside it and making Him the priority in your lives.

If you are facing difficult times or strife within the home, a prayer walkthrough can cleanse the home spiritually and make it feel like a brand new start.

A prayer walk through your home asks the Holy Spirit to be Lord of all, including your home.

(For blessing a new home, see the prayer at the bottom of this post).

How to Do a Prayer Walk to Bless and Cleanse Your Home

Recently, our small group at church had the opportunity to bless a home being built. It was a beautiful act to lay God at the foundation of the home and all that is within it, including the family that lives there.

It prompted me to do a prayer walk for our home.

I recommend starting outside and walking the perimeter of your property and house.

Pray for the foundation of the home, that it may rest firmly on Christ. Then, pray for each doorway and window as well as the porch.

From there, enter through the front door and pray through and over each room in your home. Pray over each room, your family members, and the visitors that come into your home. Use prayers that praise God, as well as ask for any specific needs your home and family may have. When praying, use scripture (I’ve included some below for you, to get you started) and include praise, thanksgiving, and requesting God’s blessing and protection.

If you are facing any spiritual, financial or relational attacks, focus on those, as well. Ask the Holy Spirit to be present in your home at all times.

Lift your home, its contents, and its inhabitants to God and trust Him with every area of your home and family.

Guide For Praying Over Your Home

Here is a simple, room-by-room, guide or outline for praying over your home during your prayer walk. I’ve included a short prayer and relevant scripture for each area of your home.

  • Pray that your home is built on the unmovable foundation of Jesus.

God, please bring peace to this home and those that live in it. You are our hedge of protection, Father, please watch over us every moment of our days. Bless the door of our home and all who enter it. As we pass through this door, draw us more deeply into your presence, and may a spirit of humility, kindness, gratitude, and love always prevail here.

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. – Matthew 7:24-27

As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete. – Luke 6:47-49

So this is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation;
the one who relies on it
will never be stricken with panic. – Isaiah 28:16

Praying for home and family

  • Pray for your family to obey the commandments and joyfully serve God

Heavenly Father, I give you my heart and promise that, as scripture says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Please keep any negativity in word and deed away from us. Allow us to grow in you and be an encouragement to each other. Lord, I ask you to protect my family – their hearts, souls, minds – all of us. We give all of ourselves to you. Give us eyes to see others as you do and to serve others joyfully.

Remind us to keep Your Word in our hearts and always follow your commands. We give each and every area of our lives to you – our finances, our homes and all that is in them, our jobs, our hobbies, our relationships. Enter every area of our lives, Lord, as we know they belong to You.

So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. – Deuteronomy 11:13

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. – Joshua 24:15

Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me – John 12:26

  • Pray Over Your Kitchen and Dining Room and for God to provide for your family’s needs and that their sustenance comes from The Lord.

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life,

which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval. – John 6:27

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? – Matthew 6:25

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. – Matthew 6:31-32

He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever. – Psalm 136:25

prayer to bless or cleanse your home
  • Pray Through and Over Each Bedroom and Pray that Each Person Finds Rest and Gives Their Heart to Christ

Adonai, please bless the doorway to this bedroom and place a hedge of protection around those that find rest here. Allow us to find rest, comfort and peace inside these walls and on this bed. Grant us refreshing sleep and a quiet peaceful haven to slumber and fellowship with you. Lord I pray that we feel your presence here and dream the dreams that You place in our hearts. God, please let us wake each day refreshed as you provide new mercies each day.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28-30

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, Lord,
make me dwell in safety. – Psalm 4:8

  •  Pray In and Over Your Living room or Family Room

Father, God, thank you for providing a home for our family. Let this house, specifically, this room, be a place of comfort, peace, and fellowship for us.

Please bless this living room (or family room) and let it be filled with love, respect, kindness, and only words that build one another up and don’t tear each other down.

Heavenly Father, I pray that our choices of entertainment will glorify you. May we never watch or listen to things that don’t honor or glorify You. Please give us wisdom and discernment in our entertainment choices and what we choose to watch or listen to on the radio, television, and the internet. Guard our hearts and minds against evil and immorality.

  • Let us show hospitality to others and demonstrate Your love to all who enter here.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. – Ephesians 4:32

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. – Hebrews 13:2

The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good. – Proverbs 15:3

  • Pray In, and Over Your Home Office and the Work You Do

Lord, thank you for the money we have to pay our bills and provide for our family. Thank you for the work we have. We know that all belongs to you, and we are entrusted with it during our time on this side of heaven. We ask that each decision we make, each dollar we spend, glorifies You.

If you run a business from home, here is an additional prayer you may wish to use:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the opportunities that you have given to me. Please give me the wisdom to make decisions that are honoring to You. I trust in You as I work to be prosperous. I ask you to expand and enlarge my territory as I pray that You allow my business to grow and bless others.

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. – Matthew 6:24

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. – 1 Corinthians 15:58

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, – Colossians 3:23

Anoint Your Home With Oil

Another way to bless or cleanse your home by prayer is to anoint your home with oil.

Oil represents the power of the Holy Spirit and is a symbol of faith in God’s ability to cleanse and make holy. It is an act of consecrating your home to Him.

To anoint your home with oil, you need just two things:  oil and a Bible.

You can also find anointing oil online or at your local Christian bookstore. Anointing oil is usually infused with myrrh, cassia, or other essential oils. However, you really don’t need any special oil to anoint your home. Olive, canola, sesame, or similar from your own pantry, will serve the same purpose.

Using oil is simply a way for believers to surrender to God and place their faith in Jesus. It is a symbolic act. When you pray over (also called consecrating) the oil, it becomes holy or set apart and becomes anointing oil.

How to Anoint or Cleanse Your Home With Oil

1)Pray over the oil (consecrate it).

2) Remove anything that may represent evil. (Any form of entertainment that does not honor God. This can include books, movies, or music. Consider also, clothing with words or images that would not please God or any art or other objects)

NOTE: If you have to stop to consider if something pleases or does not please God, it probably doesn’t.

3) Pray out loud in each room. (You can use the guide above). Ask the Holy Spirit to fill every corner and area of your home. Give your rooms, your home, and everything in it over to Him. This is a form of dedicating your home to God.

4) As you pray in and over each room, place a small portion of oil on the door frame of each room. Believe that, as you do this, God will protect you and your family.

5) Rebuke the evil one in Jesus’ name. Ask Adonai to keep all darkness from your home and family.

Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. – Genesis 28:18

“Take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy.” – Exodus 40:9

General House Blessing

I’ve given you a guide, prayers, and scripture to help you pray over your home, room by room. You may wish to do this when you first move in or on a regular basis. For daily or weekly prayer, you can use the general house blessing below, if you like.

Heavenly Father,
We give you praise for all of the blessings you have lavished on it. We ask you to bless our family, our home, and all that is within it. You are so faithful, God, and know what we need. While we may not have the wisdom or words to ask for what we need, you already know. Thank you for showing us Your love in big and small ways each day. We pray that our hearts are open to receiving your truth and grace.

Thank you, God, for giving us a home. A place for us to rest and be refreshed. A place for us to enjoy fellowship with one another. A place to open to guests and show Your love to them.

Please forgive us for complaining about what we don’t have or what we think we need. You are the author over all and have placed us where we are as part of Your plan for our lives. Help us to be content in our circumstances and trust in You.

We know that this dwelling is only our temporary home. Our forever home is with you in heaven. Help us to live our lives boldly for you and to share the gospel to expand Your Kingdom.

Jehovah Rohi, please bless this house. May it reflect Your love. Keep us safe and protect us and our home from flood, fire, hurricanes, tornados, and all natural and unnatural events, including theft and invasion. Place a hedge of protection around our house, hearts, and family.

Let our home be a safe place to refresh and rest and be welcoming to all who enter. We ask for our lives to proclaim your love and for that love to be passed down from generation to generation and extend to those to visit.

You may also wish to play this home blessing prayer by Pastor Carlos Oliveira. He recommends that you play it continuously for several hours or overnight. It’s a great alternative for those not comfortable with praying out loud. Alternatively, you can do your own prayer walkthrough to cleanse your home and play this, as well.

Have you done a prayer walk through your home? If so, how often do you do it? I’d love to hear about your experience and practices.

I have often prayed over and throughout my home as a ritual throughout my life as a single mom! In fact, at 28 when I purchased my 1st home🏠 , I literally prayed in the hallway. I'm 50 now, and, as I'm sitting in bed at our 2nd home 🏡 , (a brand new home built from ground!😄 literally chosen by my 2 adult children in an entirely different state from their home state), I sit here & recall that "this is just what I do", I PRAY OVER OUR HOME bcz I know that it works‼️ Unfortunately, I lost my 24 yr old baby girl suddenly & unexpectedly 😑 a few months back, before I'd literally moved into the home yet they had been here for about 2 years. I mention this bcz it helps for you to put it all in perspective in my true testimony that ~~~ IT IS POWER IN PRAYER!! 💯✨ I AM A TRUE LIVING WITNESS to the Power of Praying over your home!! 🏆This article is very rewarding, inspirational and transforming if you use the tools that it provides!! God Bless you all! 💖

I prayed over our home and property when we first purchased. We had heard there was a demonic spirit upstairs. It has never manifested to me but this may have cleansed it. We purchased our home 8 years ago. I also prayed over our home at the beginning of Covid for illness and my husband and I anointed each other before we went out every morning for about a week or so. I think it's time to do it again. I also know a sister that needs this.
