Being in prayer for pregnant mothers in your life, as well as prayer for yourself if you are expecting, is one of the most important and impactful things you can do during the pregnancy journey. Expectant mothers are not only expecting a new life in their little baby, but also a new life for themselves, especially with their first. Here are some prayer points you can go over for the pregnant women in your life.

Prayer for Pregnant Mothers

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)

Pregnancy can be a scary time in a woman’s life. Whether she is a brand new mother or a mother of multiples, whether she is in good health or bad, each new life brings new challenges (but also new joys, of course!).

As you or someone you know embarks on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual journey that is bringing the gift of life into the world, prayer is the most powerful tool for preparing your heart for the turmoil experienced in each aspect.

Drawing near to our loving God if you are pregnant yourself, or walking alongside any expectant mothers in your life, can not be done without prayer. Let’s go over each aspect of our lives affected by pregnancy (which is literally all of them) and how we can be in prayer for pregnant women in each area.

Prayer for the Physical Turmoil

Although women are made especially with the powers to bring new life into the world, it is not easy on the body (*cough* morning sickness *cough*). Women’s bodies undergo numerous drastic changes during pregnancy, some of which are permanent. No quick and drastic bodily change is ever encountered without discomfort and even pain, even if you are in good health before becoming pregnant. As expectant mothers sacrifice 9 plus months of comfort, energy, and overall lifestyle, these are prayers you can pray for a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby:

A prayer for the health of the mother:

Lord, watch over (insert name here) as she gives up her body to create her little baby. May her pregnancy experience be without complication and full of strength to push through the discomfort and physical pain.

A prayer for the health of the baby:

Heavenly Father, may the little life growing inside (insert name here)’s womb be in your hands. May the unborn baby develop at a regular pace, growing healthy and strong organs to sustain his or her life in this world.

A prayer for a safe delivery:

Dear Lord, hold onto (insert name here) and her precious baby as she brings new life into the world. Keep her and the baby safe and healthy during the delivery process, giving (insert name here) the strength to push through the pain and experience the great joy that is the gift of life she’s worked so hard to bring. Hold on to that precious little life as he/she leaves the comfort of his/her mother’s womb and experiences the crazy world for the very first time.

A prayer for medical professionals involved:

God, have your hand in all the doctor visits that (insert name here) will have during this pregnancy journey. Give her doctors and nurses wisdom as they guide her and her baby along this process. May they show loving care to (insert name here).

Prayer for the Mental Turmoil

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

1 Peter 5:7 (ESV)

With rapid physical changes to the pregnant woman’s body comes a struggle in the mind. Change in the mirror is a difficult thing to stay strong through. On top of this, there is anxiety about the massive change that bringing your little baby home will bring to your life; and preparing for it with baby showers, finances, work situations, etc.

There are prayers you can pray for the mental health and mindset of pregnant mothers:

A prayer for anxiety about the health of the baby:

Dear Lord, calm the mind of (insert name here) as she worries over her unborn children. Bring her peace and remind her of your provision over her baby’s life and her own life. May she find comfort in you no matter the health of the baby.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Jeremiah 29:11 (ESV)

A prayer for anxiety over preparation:

Dear heavenly Father, be with (insert name here) as she prepares for her little one. May her anxiety over all the things to be done be eased in your presence. I pray that she gets everything she needs to take care of her precious child.

A prayer for her mindset about her changing body:

Dear God, it is so hard to watch the body you’ve always known go through a drastic change. Remind (insert name here) of her inward and outward beauty as she sacrifices her body to create this new life for which you have great plans. Focus her mind on the beautiful gift that is coming to her through this change, giving her the strength to endure it.

A prayer for her support system:

Lord, give (insert name here) a strong and peaceful support system throughout her whole pregnancy. Whether it be family, friends, or both, place people in her life who are going to be there for her not just physically but also to look out for her mental health.

Prayer for the Emotional Turmoil

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

Isaiah 43:2 (ESV)

Emotional difficulties during pregnancy are often paired with the mental difficulties. That is, emotional responses to a changing body and anxiety over the big life changes. Bringing a child into the world can mean making huge changes to your everyday life, both before and after what is hopefully a safe delivery.

These are prayers you can pray over the emotional state of expectant mothers:

A prayer over distress towards her body:

Dear Lord, please be with (insert name here) as she watches her body change. It is so hard to feel like you are losing yourself through physical appearance, but again remind her of her inward and outward beauty, as well as the purpose of the change. Even in her negative feelings, draw her closer to you.

A prayer for distress over lifestyle changes:

Dear God, it is so hard to make quick and big changes to our lives when we have only known it one way for so long. Assure (insert name here) that these are positive changes, focusing her mind on the mission of presenting the glory of God and growing His kingdom through the little blessing that her baby is.

Prayer for the Spiritual Turmoil

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Above all else, and because of all else, pregnancy can be a time of spiritual distress; with all the anxieties, emotional roller coasters, and physical exhaustion that affects everything. Even with a perfectly healthy pregnancy there is a lot that can both distract a pregnant woman from her relationship with God, as well as pull her from her strong faith. These are prayers you can pray over the spiritual state of pregnant women:

A prayer for her to draw near to God:

Dear heavenly Father, I lift up (insert name here) and her relationship with you throughout her whole pregnancy. I know that is a time where she can easily be distracted by the world, so draw her near to you. Remind her every day of your presence and give her the strength to fight through her exhaustion and prioritize her time with you.

A prayer for her prayer life:

Father God I pray that (insert name here) would walk in constant and unceasing prayer during this journey. May her first response to both good and bad be prayer. Don’t let the worries of the world pull her from her communication with you.

“Pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 (ESV)

A prayer for her to see God working:

Dear God, pregnancy is a time of many uncertainties. I pray that (insert name here) would see you working in everything, in every little part of that baby growing in her womb. Even in the bad, may she see your hand at work.

A prayer for her to trust in God:

Dear Lord, as (insert name here) recognizes your workings in this time of her life, help her to remain steadfast and trust in you no matter what she hears at her doctor’s appointments. Remind her of your great plans for her life and that you work all things for the good of your people.

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”

Isaiah 26:3 (ESV)

Scripture to Pray During Pregnancy

Prayers of scripture are beautiful prayers. They not only place us in direct communication with God, but they also focus our minds on His word and allow us to meditate on it.

You may think that there isn’t much to do with pregnancy in the Bible, other than the story of Mary, of course, but there is a lot that relates to the pregnancy journey! Here are some of those scriptures that you can pray during your time in prayer for pregnant women:

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.”

Psalm 127:3 (ESV)

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV)

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.”

Psalm 139:13 (ESV)

“He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you.”

Deuteronomy 7:13 (ESV)

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”

James 1:17-18 (ESV)

Prayer for pregnant women, in Jesus’ name, in your life is so very important. Of course, our almighty God already has a plan for everything, and we are not going to change his mind. Still, the purpose of prayer is to align our hearts with God’s and draw us closer together as a unified body of Christ, whether we attend the same local church or not. Again, pregnancy is as good a time as ever for the enemy to step in and pull women away from the arms of their heavenly Father, and being unified with the body of Christ is the best thing we can do to fight back!
